All typewriters are different. Each machine performs differently, has unique features and even has it's own quirks.
I have created a ranking system for each machine to help anyone interested in typewriters pick out the machine that is right for them.
Each category has 1-5 points, 5 being the best. I have included questions that help explain what each category is for. Everyone has their own unique taste and likes different things, so some of these categories are subjective.
Ranking:
Build Quality: This category focuses on how well the machine is put together, do the keys, levers, gears etc., function well and feel high quality? Does the case fit together properly?
Ease of Use: This category rates how easy the machine is to use. Are the margins easy to set? Are important functions clearly labeled?
Typing Feel: How does the machine feel when typing on it? Are the keys effortless, or do they require a certain amount of force to print a character on the page. Are there adjustments like touch control that allow the user to customize their typing experience.
Aesthetic/Design Factor: How does the machine look!? Would it look nice on a display shelf?
Value: Are these machines "desirable"? Will this be a machine that you will use often?
Reliability: Does the machine work properly? Are there any flaws or mechanical issues that affect the performance? How easy is maintenance on the machine (opening the case, accessing components, changing the ribbon). Wil the machine require any major repairs with regular use? Is the machine known to be reliable?
Recommended: This category is based on my personal experience with each machine, and whether I would recommend it to someone looking for a typewriter.
